As a teenager I was constantly battling sporting injuries with my hypermobility. My mum, who is the world’s biggest Pilates advocate, got sick of the complaining and expensive physio bills and sent my sister and I up to a local Pilates mat class one evening a week because “Pilates is good for you!” It was hard, it was boring and I didn’t want to be there. It was at the age of 16 after being dragged into studio sessions and throwing my limbs around on a spring loaded moving carriage, I decided this Pilates thing was stupid and wanted no part of it but Mum persisted I keep at it. My family was so sick of hearing the “P” word that we started a Pilates jar instead of the regular swear jars most households with teenagers might have. Each time she would mention Pilates at home, another dollar was to be added to the jar. Years later, my mother owned her own studio and I was done with hospitality after nearly ten years of long hours on my feet. I was tired and my body felt broken so I quit thinking I could just become part of the team in mum’s studios. Mum loved this idea and she agreed to it on one condition, that I complete a Pilates teaching course The Pilates jar had come in handy and I was on the way to becoming a fully qualified teacher. Initially I struggled with the concepts of Pilates, I constantly felt frustrated at the microscopic movements and the strong focus on breath, and of constantly being told to slow down and “do less.” It was a rough re-introduction to the method. Ready to admit defeat and give up, I noticed that I could suddenly sit upright without much effort, and reach my hands past my toes without the hamstrings screaming at me, I had no knee pain, my ankles didnt roll nearly as much as they often had and at that moment, my entire outlook on Pilates changed. I was HOOKED but more annoyingly, my mother was right, Pilates is good for me! As a teacher I enjoy empowering people through Pilates and helping them discover their own bodies potential and love working with them to help them achieve their goals. To me it’s not about the repertoire or the programming formula, it’s about what your client needs at that moment in time. I have found the importance in establishing strong foundations and awareness to ensure each movement counts. The joy it brings me when someone tells me their leg just ‘floated’ up from the ground is second only to witnessing the tremor of truth as they truly connect into their body. Building trust between myself and the clients to help them get the most out of each visit is a given in each and every session. With a varying range of pathologies and populations across my client base, I strongly believe that Pilates is the exercise for ‘Every Body.’ Over the years I have discovered a passion for movement and I am so excited to continue my learning journey with further Pilates studies with Body Organics Education as a course provider. I believe you can never stop learning.
